They're Doing across America What They Did to Christianity

Trumpism's most telling and characteristic moments – not its most important, nor cruelest, nor most dangerous, nor stupidest, but potentially its most enlightening – emerged earlier this harvest season. Over the span of several weeks, the US president started showing all observers his designs for a gilded ballroom two times larger than the White House and then began independently demolishing the East Wing portion to build it.

He has performed deeds 10,000 times as bad – the present calculation of casualties resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and growing, and presently a study projected his energy policies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have risked – genuinely, no previous leader would have imagined – independently wrecking major areas of the presidential residence in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of some of the nation's most affluent, the majority of whom maintain dealings with federal agencies.

We moved from 'the meek shall inherit the planet' toward 'the gentle will succumb of cholera'

As disorienting as it is to watch the leader seek to颠覆 the traditional concept of democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who should not find it entirely new. That is those of us – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.

We have observed across decades as politically conservative religious groups turned the Jesus we grew up with into the total contrary of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they transformed an image of affection into an icon of hate who blesses precisely the cruelties that he criticized in scripture; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, over decades instead of months, yet it remains unsettling in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.

A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground

So let me first describe the Jesus from my upbringing, as conceptually the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and since the quickly increasing segment of Americans may possess limited understanding regarding him since they are non-believers or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that exist valuable insights of substantial value in biblical accounts.

It is decidedly absolutely not the account of a mighty king emerging; instead, an infant arrives to parents without shelter in an automotive shelter, who need to rapidly escape to a different country to evade secret police. The infant develops in simple surroundings, a working carpenter; his doctrine focuses on affection for others, especially for the poor – not simply tender feelings, but practical compassion, shown by providing food and sheltering. Christ's response to aggression is to present the other cheek – not as a demonstration of passive acceptance, but as a way to teach the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever someone steals your coat you ought to provide the person your additional clothing too.

The obvious and straightforward truth that Christ from scripture calls for a kind of radical love concentrated on the poor is what has always made the Christian faith somewhat of a scandalous religion: engaging for the general public, but due to its intrinsic extremism demanding to be contained. In the fifties it was contained via weakening – Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.

A Conflict for the Best Within Us

Hence I have become heartened to witness the steadfast resistance regarding Trump emerge in this past year. It has served as great solace to participate in developing the initiative that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and likely has encouraged voters to participate in large quantities in the off-year elections. We will need to continue it, and through comparable resolve, with American flags at every demonstration and appeals to the highest qualities of American history.

We will be questioned ... regarding how you welcomed the foreigner? Did you accept these individuals and receive them or refuse?

The country is optimally secured, essentially, by reference to the best about American history, similar to Christianity is optimally secured by relationship to what makes it special and magnificent, particularly the pattern of Christ. In neither case does it mean pretending the most damaging regarding America and religious tradition did not happen; it represents both meekness and faith, a combination that committed US believers should embrace.
